Culture.  Barcelona, 11/05/2017

The Fundació Josep Irla now has winners for the Francesc Macià Memorial Prize and for this year’s Lluís Companys Memorial Prize, which it will award on 11th May during the 2017 Irla Night. The Francesc Macià Memorial Prize, which distinguishes a person or organization that has stood out for promoting Catalan culture, has this year been awarded to Peter Bush, for having translated into English outstanding authors of Catalan literature such as Mercè Rodoreda, Joan Sales or Quim Monzó. The award means yet another acknowledgement in Bush’s career; in 2014 he was awarded the Ramon Llull Prize for Literary Translation for his English translation of Josep Pla’s The Grey Notebook.

Peter Bush is one of the most prestigious translators of Catalan literature. He is the translator of some of the most important names in Catalan literature, such as Mercè Rodoreda, Joan Sales or Josep Pla, as well as writers from the new generation like Teresa Solana, Francesc Serés and Najat El Hachmi. He has also worked as a translator of Portuguese, French and Spanish, specializing above all in the work of Juan Goytisolo.

The publication in the United States of Josep Pla’s The Grey Notebook, and in the United Kingdom of Uncertain Glory, by Joan Sales, received excellent reviews in the specialist press. In 2014 he was awarded the Ramon Llull Prize for Literary Translation for his English translation of Josep Pla’s The Grey Notebook.

The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, 11th May at the Ateneu Barcelonès
