Citizenship and Visuality: Filming Catalonia’s Cultural Landscape

How are other languages and cultures, other than Catalan and Spanish, represented in Catalan documentaries that address cultural diversity in a globalized city such as Barcelona. To what extent can visual production—and in particular documentary film—be a tool of political intervention, what function does it serve and what impact can it have? In a sense, it’s a way of asking how culture, and the arts, can be made socially relevant.

Isaac Ulam's film, which won the Juried Prize at the Arizona Underground Film Festival, is an ascetic vision about a being who detests the dysfunctional social model that this society proposes and opts for the way of self-destruction. Loneliness, addiction, survival, human sacrifice and a strong ideological component, turn "Bronko" into the symbol of the new contemporary redeemer.

"Perseguits i Salvats," presented in conjunction with the Diputació de Lleida, tells the story of the escape of Jew refugees during the Holocaust through the mountains that connect France and Spain. The exhibition's opening will include a conference and and documentary screening focusing on the experience of survivors of the Holocaust who fled to the Pyrenees and their families.
