Autumn brings to the UK the translation from Catalan of three essential books, two novels from the 20th century, Uncertain Glory by Joan Sales (MacLehose Press, tr. Peter Bush) and The Gray Notebook by Josep Pla (NYRB, tr. Peter Bush) as well as a contemporary book by one of the most internationally celebrated Catalan authors of our times, Confessions by Jaume Cabré (Arcadia Press, tr. Mara Faye Lethem).
Cinema.  London,  30/10/2014
October is a very special month for Catalan Cinema in the UK. On the first week don't miss the chance to meet Lluís Miñarro and Ventura Pons, who will be presenting their films as part of the 6th Catalan Window of the London Spanish Film Festival. The BFI London Film Festival will present four unmissable Catalan productions from 8 to 19 October: 10,000 km by Carlos Marques-Marcet, El niño by Daniel Monzón, Sobre la marxa by Jordi Morató and Still the Water (co-production). At the end of the month ICA Cinema will screen Pere Portabella’s ground-breaking masterpiece Warsaw Bridge (Pont de Varsòvia).

Improve your level of Catalan at the London School of Economics (LSE) with an intermediate course for students with previous knowledge who have learnt to use the language with a certain degree of autonomy and wish to improve their skills in communicative situations. Registration for the course is now open.

With the aim of reviving the historic and cultural links between Catalonia and England, the Assamblea Nacional Catalana in association with Catalans UK present an event of poetry, music and current affairs in Cambridge from 3 to 5 October. Jocs Florals is a Catalan cultural celebration originated in the 14th Century and then celebrated in the exile, including England, during the Franco Regime. In 1956 Jocs Florals were organised in Trinity College at Cambridge University. Don't miss the opportunity to experience an other edition of this unique celebration in its contemporary form with over 25 participants. Entrance is free to all sessions.

The Department of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies of the University of Liverpool organises a week of events celebrating the cultures of the Iberian peninsular. The programme includes the 6th edition of the Peers Symposium as well as lectures, film screenings, performances, seminars, poetry readings, live music and dance. The programma includes the book launch of Vanilla Salt by Ada Parellada at restaurant Lunya.

Acclaimed Catalan chef Ada Parellada will present her novel Vanilla Salt at restaurant Lunya in Liverpool on 14 October and at the Instituto Cervantes Manchester, as part of Manchester Literature Festival, on 15 October. The novel, a sensual exploration of the kitchen and the human heart, is published in English by Alma Books and translated by Julie Wark.

Meet CSI and writer Marc Pastor who will talk about Barcelona Shadows his celebrated novel about a real-life female killer, published by Pushkin Press. The writer will be the special guest at Litro Book club get-together on 16 October and will give a talk and sign books at Waterstones Covent Garden on Friday 17 October.

A unique opportunity to attend an illustrated lecture by Catalan photographer Joan Fontcuberta, followed by the artist in conversation with 'Stranger than Fiction''s curator Greg Hobson. Event organised in the frame of ' Stranger than Fiction', the first major exhibiton by winner of the 2013 Hasselblad International Award in Photography, Joan Fontcuberta, at Media Space, Science Museum.

Witty, fast paced and hilarious, a young couple's frustrations explode with catastrophic honesty as a masked figure dares them to voice their true feelings. ATRESBANDES company will present their multi-award winning show 'Solfatara' in eleven UK venues from 9 to 29 October. 'Solfatara' is performed in Catalan and Spanish with English surtitles that take on a subversive life of their own.

Internatinally acclaimed Catalan dance company La Veronal will present their first full-lenght work to the UK. Taking inspiration from the Italian city, 'Siena' is a reflection on art and the human that takes us on a journey through the history of art from Titian’s The Venus of Urbino to David Lynch's Mulholland Drive.
