
The artistic proposal for Catalonia and the Balearic Islands for the 2011 Venice Biennale has been set in motion with the announcement of an international competition to choose the project’s curator. The winning artistic project will be included in the Collateral Events section, which forms part of the official programme of the International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale and is made up of exhibitions organized by institutions involved in the areas of art and culture.
On Thursday, 29th April, the panel of judges that is to choose the project for the Catalonia and Balearic Islands pavilion at the 2011 Venice Art Biennale met for the first time. The panel, proposed by the board of the Institut Ramon Llull, is made up of six professionals of renowned international prestige. The objective of this first meeting is to analyze the conceptual framework of the project and the content of the competition rules.
On Friday, 26th March at 6 p.m., the Graduate Center of the City University of New York is to host the symposium “Translation policies: memory and cultural exports in Catalonia and Galicia”, with the participation of Dolores Vilavedra from the University of Santiago de Compostela and Marta Marin Dòmine from Wilfrid Laurier University.
The online database Catalandrama has received a total of 627 requests for contemporary Catalan scripts translated into other languages in its first year.
The March edition of the cultural journal Brooklyn Rail includes translations of the work of Hilari de Cara and Ramon Erra in its online section InTranslation.
Two of the most outstanding figures in the Catalan cultural field have presented their work in New York. The writer Jaume Cabré went on a promotional tour from 17th to 27th February on the occasion of the publication of the English translation of his book Viatge d’hivern (Winter Journey) by the American publishing house Swan Isle Press. This is the first of the author’ works that can be read in English. In the musical sphere, on 25th February the New York group Perspectives Ensemble performed the world premiere of Four Darks in Red, a piece by Benet Casablancas that was composed especially for the Miller Theatre at Columbia University in New York. The title of the piece, taken from a painting by Marc Rothko, is Casablancas’ homage to the artist. The trips by these two cultural figures received the support of the Institut Ramon Llull.

The American publishing house Swan Isle Press has published the English translation of Jaume Cabré’s novel Viatge d’hivern (Winter Journey), the first of the author’s work available in English. On the occasion of the novel’s publication, which has received the support of the IRL, the author is carrying out a promotional tour, taking him to Chicago on 17th February and New York on 23rd February.
On Friday, 12th February at 7 p.m., the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center at New York University will host a poetry reading by the Catalan poet and translator Melcion Mateu and the poet and journalist Andreu Gomila.
On 19th November, the Elebash Recital Hall was the scene of a concert with pieces by the Majorcan musician and composer Antoni Parera Fons. Taking part were the violinist Joan Plana Nadal, the pianist Andreu Riera and the soprano Isabel Rey, with narrations by Guillem Frontera. The journalist and musical expert Candice Agree hosted the concert.
