Catalan Days is a multi-disciplinary festival including dance, film, literature, classical, jazz and electronic music with leading cultural figures being represented in all areas. The festival will be enhanced by the world famous Catalan cuisine.

Two years ago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted
the exhibition Barcelona and Modernity, Gaudí to
Dalí
. To mark the occasion, the Institut Ramon Llull
presented Made in Catalunya, a program of concerts,
dance performances, exhibitions and literary events
refecting the many vibrant facets of contemporary
Catalan culture.

Given the program’s success and its warm reception by
the public, the Institut Ramon Llull has decided to or-
ganize a second festival, Catalan Days, again bringing to
New York a broad and rich selection of Catalan culture’s
performing and media arts, literature, and, for the frst
time, gastronomy.

Catalan Days opens with a choir, the Coral Universi-
tat de les Illes Balears
, followed by a select program
of theater, dance, music and cinema. The festival features a
reading from Mercè Rodoreda’s The Time of the Doves,
one of the gems of Catalan and world literature and
then, moving from the past to the present, it introduces
three plays showing the energy of new Catalan drama.
Catalan contemporary dance, internationally-acclaimed
for its quality and innovation, plays an important and
well-deserved role in the program, as four frst-rate
companies bring their works to the stage. The music
portion of the Catalan Days program offers, in addition
to the Balearic Islands choir, Carles Santos’ talent and
creativity, and an exciting array of jazz performed by
musicians whose reputations reach far beyond the Cata-
lan borders. Worthy of separate mention is SonarSound
NY
, a presentation of Barcelona’s Festival of Advanced
Music
, mixing disciplines and artists from Catalonia,
the Balearic Islands and New York, and revealing some
of the new paths opened up by today’s creative artists.

As no single cultural event can do justice to the wealth
of creative talent from Catalonia and the Balearic
Islands, Catalan Days is meant to be a sampling, a frst
step in discovering all that Catalan culture has to offer.
