Francesc Abad exhibits ‘Estratègia de la precarietat’ (Strategy of Precariousness) in Berlin

Arts.  Berlin, 11/08/2017

The Kunstverein Tiergarten Gallery in Berlin is showing the exhibition entitled ‘Estratèga de la precarietat’ (Strategy of Precariousness) by Francesc Abad from 11 August to 17 September. The collection revolves around the most recent works of the Catalan artist, some of which are being shown publicly for the first time.

The exhibition ‘Estratèga de la precarietat’ will be inaugurated on Friday 11 August at 19:00. The project has been curated by Miquel Bardagil, Magdala Perpinyà and Monika Anselment and organized by the ACVIC contemporary arts centre with the collaboration of the IRL. On Wednesday 23 August, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition by Claudia Beelitz, and on 9 September, Claudia Kalász will read some of the artist’s texts.

To a large extent, the work of Francesc Abad (Terrassa, 1944) is structured around his reflections on time made in the most absolute present (territory, ideologies, conflict) to be projected into a past conceived as a construction of history and memory (W. Benjamin) and a future that needs to be considered and formulated under the shadow of utopia (E. Bloch).

‘Estratègia de la precarietat’ features an epilogue of Abad’s artistic career based on four key themes: ‘Els Diaris del Pensar’, through which he focuses on historical events of the recent past; ‘Les Costelles del Segle’, which offers a critical viewpoint of the present; ‘Espais per a la Utopia’, with a selection of five interviews with different individuals from the world of culture and philosophy; and ‘Les Nòmines’, in which the artist explores what the term ‘employee’ means in the context of creation.

Francesc Abad has been one of the most important Catalan artists since he first embarked on his creative journey as part of the so-called conceptual art movement in Catalonia in the early 1970s. He was one of the founders and a key member of the ‘Grup de Treball’ (Working Group), the most iconic group of artists and philosophers to emerge in the context of critical engagement facilitated by dematerialized artistic attitudes, with which he also participate in 1972 in Kassel’s ‘Documenta 5’. Over almost 45 years of uninterrupted activity he has regularly exhibited his work across the whole of Spain. In recent years, he has also taken part in important themed and group exhibitions of a historical and critical nature, both nationally and internationally.
