After training at the Rogelio Rivel Circus School and taken part in projects separately, Tomeu Amer and Griselda Juncà founded the Hotel Iocandi company early in 2012. A year later, the singer Joana Gomila joined them and the trio invented the long version of ‘Esquerdes’, which was given its first performance at the Escena Poblenou Festival in Barcelona in 2014. They have taken the show to Catalan, Spanish, French and Italian festivals, such as MAC Arts de Carrer, the Européenne de cirque de Toulouse, Kaldearte Vitoria or the Mercat de les Flors.
The members of the company are Grisela Juncà, born in Sant Feliu Sasserra, specialising in static trapeze and holding a degree in Humanities and Theory of Literature; Tomeu Amer, born in Manacor, specialising in the balancing ladder and acrobatics with a long career as a stage actor; and Joana Gomila, born in Manacor, holding a degree in jazz from the Liceu Higher Conservatory and another in History of Art.
Their most widely seen project, ‘Esquerdes’ (45 min.), is a street show that combines aerial elements, the balancing ladder and live music through their three bodies in constant movement. She sings and runs, he looks for the empty space like the fissure (esquerda) trying to find its place. On 19 July, Hotel Iocandi fire the starting gun for their summer tour, which will take them to Germany, France and Holland.
