El Internacional (1984-1986). New York's Archaeological Sandwich

Culture.  New York, 19/03/2017

The first restaurant to introduce tapas in the United States was more than just a restaurant. El Internacional, conceived by artist Antoni Miralda and chef Montse Guillén, soon became an icon of New York's downtown scene of the 1980s. This is the story of a project that transformed dining experiences into installations and performance art, setting a precedent for the social art to come.

MoMA PS1 + Artbook / D.A.P. invite you to celebrate the publication of "El Internacional (1984-1986). New York's Archaeological Sandwich", a book published by Dilecta / Foodcultura documenting the storied tapas bar/art project helmed by the Catalan artist Antoni Miralda and chef Montse Guillén in 1980s New York City. The restaurant was a creative hub in the downtown art scene, combining the social rituals of eating with performance art.
