Sonia Gómez presents 'Ballerina' in London

Performing.  London, 16/03/2017

During the current severe recession, Barcelona-based artist Sonia Gomez asked herself how to go about making a dance for today. In a personal and straightforward manner, the resulting work 'Ballerina' explores how to create a show for a solo performer with an audience of fifty in your bedroom. Don't miss the chance to see it at Toynbee Studios, presented by Arts Admin on Thursday 16 March.

'During the severe recession in Catalunya, Barcelona-based artist Sonia Gomez asked herself how to go about making a dance for today, based on creative content, performance style and relationship with the audience. In a personal and straightforward manner, the resulting work BALLERINA explores how to create a show for solo performer, with an audience of fifty, in your bedroom. With BALLERINA, Gomez takes 'auto' as a stance, vindicating the possibility of carrying out a project despite the circumstances. Adding 'auto' to keywords in performance making: auto-employment, auto-creation, auto-suggestion, auto-direction, auto-production and auto-programming, this is an 'unplugged' dance pursuing a desire for utopia, fuelled by an anti-austere movement sensibility.

Sonia Gomez has been making and presenting work for over 15 years. She trained at Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and P.A.R.T.S (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels. This is the UK premiere of BALLERINA. Sonia will lead a Performance Lab from 13-17 March inviting twelve artists to create their own versions of BALLERINA.

Additional support from Create to Connect funded through the Culture Programme of the European Union.'
