Choreographer Maria Rovira leads Medellín ballet company

Performing.  Colombia, 22/08/2014

Maria Rovira is changing her native city of Mataró for the Colombian town of Medellín. Rovira founded Trànsit Dansa in 1985 in the capital of Maresme but decided to take on the challenge and leaving for South America for two years. There, this Catalan choreographer is currently directing the dance company Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia. The ballerina admits, however, that she will not leave her company behind in its 30th year anniversary.

Colombian company Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia has chosen the Catalan choreographer Maria Rovira as the new artistic director for the next two years, after her participation in Medellín Nacional Dance Seminar last year. Mataró choreographer will juggle this assignment and other works for other dance groups, mainly from South America, and the celebration of the 30th year anniversary of her company Trànsit Dansa. Rovira’s debut next September, who has been working with the Colombian ballet dancers for several months, will also be the Medellín Ballet’s debut.

The expert choreographer admits she is facing this new assignment as a change of pace and with excitement. Rovira criticises Catalonia, and especially the capital of Maresme, for not supporting culture. In fact, she accuses Mataró City Council of working against her last project in Aula de Dansa in Can Gasol, Mataró. Now, she says, she will try to stage a similar performance in Medellín, a city that lives for dance. It is not the first time Rovira works abroad, after having worked in Cuba, Venezuela, Argentina and Germany, among other countries.

She will direct it for two years
