This year, the main new feature is a visit to Menorca during the students' stay in the Balearic Islands
The Ramon Llull Institute has organised the Catalan Language University Campus in partnership with the Government of Andorra since 2003, for people who are pursuing their education outside Catalan-speaking regions. Students considerably improve their knowledge of the Catalan language by taking language and cultural courses and participating in a wide range of cultural and leisure activities. When the Campus was held for the first time, in 2002, the Balearic Islands government played the role that was assumed by the IRL in 2003.
Thirty students of Catalan from 18 different countries (including Canada, the USA, Poland, Italy, Iran and Israel) will undergo linguistic immersion for 3 weeks (from 25 July to 9 August) in various Catalan-speaking territories, starting in Artà (Majorca) and finishing in the Andorran town of Escaldes-Engordany.
Weekend in Menorca
As a new feature this year, the IRL has included a visit to Menorca on the first weekend of August, to coincide with the Es Migjorn Gran festival. By leaving Majorca, the students "have an opportunity to find out more about life in the Balearic Islands," according to the assistant director of the IRL, Fanny Tur. Tur emphasised the variety of activities included in the programme, and that "they are the key to the success of this campus, which receives twice as many applications as it can accept every year."
According to one of the campus organisers, Miquel Àngel Tortell, "the advantage of this campus is that as well as attending language classes and cultural conferences, students can gain first hand experience of the culture and day to day life in the Catalan-speaking regions, which would be very difficult to do if it was not on a campus like this."
